This is one of my favorite throwbacks of all time…see my Grandfather made this Steak with Red Gravy for my Mother, my Mother made this for us five children, quite often. You will not even believe that just a few simple ingredients can produce such flavor. The one key ingredient is Heinz Ketchup…yep…believe me…if you serve this to someone who did not watch you prepare it…they would never even know.

So, I have changed up this recipe just a little…for tradition sake…I used round steak to write this recipe…but most often I use ribeye…ribeye just produces a much tender and flavorful finished dish. I paired with my amazing homemade mashed potatoes…click here for recipe! I did add a few cloves of garlic to my mashed potatoes…just peel and place whole into pot with potatoes prior to cooking.

Steak with red gravy and mashed potatoes

As mentioned above…I did use round steak in this recipe, only because I wanted to stick with tradition…I found round steak in the grocery store already cut into thin steaks (about 3/4″). I would, however, recommend using ribeye. Just cut the ribeye into 3″ to 4″ pieces.

Heat the olive oil in a heavy bottom pot (I used an enameled cast iron plan like this one). Season both sides of the steak with kosher salt and pepper. Dredge each piece of steak…on both sides with the flour. Place in pot and brown on all sides.

Add the Heinz ketchup to the steak. Scrape the bottom of the pot to loosen up the browned bits and combine well. Toss in the sliced onions. You will be adding the water just a little bit at a time. Add the first cup and check the consistency of the sauce. If it is a little thick, add just a touch more water. I usually take the ketchup bottle and add water to that…shake and pour inside the pot.

Place lid and allow to simmer until the steak is nice and tender. This will take at least an hour to an hour and a half. Stir often and keep checking the consistency…the sauce will thicken as it simmers. You may have to add a touch more water as the sauce simmers.

You are going to be amazed at the flavor you just created from basically, ketchup and water…make this for someone and see if they can guess how you made it! Serve this fabulous Steak with Red Gravy along side homemade mashed potatoes. Makes for the perfect comfort meal! ENJOY!

I am more than just recipes. I love fashion and style too! Most importantly, I love my Family (my Hubby and my Fur Babies). My Husband (aka my “Kitchen Bitch”) means the world to me. He’s pretty damn cool too. Not only is he one of the nicest guys you will ever meet, he also has had a lengthy career in professional hockey. Not only winning two Stanley Cups with the Pittsburgh Penguins in the early ’90’s, but most recently winning the Calder Cup with the Charlotte Checkers, amongst many other accolades. If you live in Charlotte and play hockey, or have a family member who plays, be sure to contact him!

Our life has changed dramatically in the past few years with the passing of our two goldendoodles, Vegas and Viva. We were lucky enough to have Vegas for five years (totally wish it was longer). Most recently, losing our Viva to a brain tumor in July of 2020. We welcomed our mini goldendoodle 7, almost seven years ago. We just added the amazing Hazel! Of course, I am always posting tons and tons of photos! Be sure to check out my recipe for Pet Bone Broth!
