Description

Making Cheese Fondue at Home is an easy and delicious way to bring a touch of elegance to a small dinner party, a cozy date night, or to celebrate Valentine’s Day in with the ones you love. With just a few ingredients and a simple cooking method, you can create a creamy, flavorful fondue perfect for dipping bread, meats, vegetables, and more.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 cup shredded Gruyère cheese
  • 3/4 cup shredded Fontina cheese
  • 1 cup shredded Gouda cheese
  • 1/3 cup shredded Jarlsberg cheese
  • 2 tablespoons cornstarch
  • 1 garlic clove
  • 1 cup dry white wine
  • 1 teaspoon Dijon mustard
  • 1/2 tablespoon fresh lemon juice
  • 1/2 teaspoon nutmeg
  • Cracked black pepper, to finish

Instructions

  1. Prepare your favorite dippers in advance, if possible. Arrange them on a serving board.
  2. Shred the cheeses into a large bowl, and toss with cornstarch until evenly coated.
  3. Rub the inside of an electric fondue pot (or a heavy-bottomed pot on the stove) with the garlic clove.
  4. Pour in the white wine, Dijon mustard, fresh lemon juice, and nutmeg. Heat over medium-low heat until warm, but not boiling.
  5. Gradually add the cheeses, stirring or whisking constantly, allowing each handful to melt before adding more.
  6. Continue stirring until smooth and creamy. Adjust the consistency, if needed, by adding more cheese or a splash of wine.
  7. Optionally, garnish the fondue with cracked black pepper.
  8. Serve immediately with your prepared dippers.
  9. ENJOY!

Notes

  • The better the cheese, the smoother and more flavorful your fondue will be. Choose a combination of meltable cheeses like Gruyère, Fontina, and Gouda.
  • In total, you will need approximately a pound of cheese to make this fondue recipe.
  • Shred the cheese for better melting.
  • Toss the shredded cheese with cornstarch to prevent clumping, and to create a velvety texture.
  • Heat the wine gently before adding cheese and stir constantly to avoid scorching or separation.
  • Stir in small amounts of cheese at a time, letting each batch fully melt before adding more.
  • Keep the cheese mixture at a low, steady temperature to maintain the right consistency and prevent it from breaking.
  • Dry white wine helps emulsify the cheese. If avoiding alcohol, substitute with broth and a splash of vinegar.
  • Rubbing the inside of the pot with a garlic clove enhances the flavor, without overwhelming the fondue.
  • Stirring keeps the fondue smooth and prevents cheese from sticking to the bottom.
  • Use an electric fondue pot or keep a stovetop version over a tea light to maintain the right consistency.
  • If the fondue thickens too much, add a splash of wine or milk to loosen it.
  • Offer bread, vegetables, meats, and fruits for a balanced fondue experience.
  • The nutrition information for this cheese fondue at home does NOT include the dippers.
  • Warm leftovers over low heat with a bit of added liquid to restore smoothness.
